Blood transfusion is a multi-step process with risk of error in each process from selecting donors, collecting and processing donations, testing of donor and patient samples, issue of compatible blood, to transfusing the patient. Accreditation provides a framework within which these activities are established, performed in a quality-focused way and continuously monitored to improve outcomes. The risk associated with blood transfusion can be significantly reduced by the introduction of accreditation system through well implemented quality systems, established external quality assessment, education and training.
Thus together with the support of its stakeholders the NBBS has already started working towards realizing the accreditation of its blood banks by the African Society of Blood transfusion (AfSBT). So far many progress have been made in collaboration with CDC, WHO, SANBS and ICAP Ethiopia.
